Watch the First Episode of New Order Documentary Series “Transmissions”

A head of the “Definitive Edition” release of their 1981 debut album MovementNew Order have premiered the first video of Transmissions—a documentary style series of interviews with all four original members of the band chronicling their transition from Joy Division to New Order, and the creation of their first album after the suicide of front-man Ian Curtis—which occurred just as the band were set to embark on their first North American tour.

In the first episode, Bernard Sumner talks about recording Movement, transitioning into singing, embarking on American tour dates that were supposed to be done as Joy Division, having the band’s gear stolen in New York, and more.

“Rob Gretton came up with this wonderful idea that we shouldn’t play any of the Joy Division songs,” says frontman Bernard Sumner in episode one. “That was the end of Joy Division, it was done.

“We’ve always been very idealistic. It was almost commercial suicide. It would be today. Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was very clever. Maybe it gave us this sort of mystique, maybe.”

The Movement “Definitive Edition” boxed set will be released this April on both CD and vinyl in a 4-disc collection that also includes a bonus CD filled with previously unreleased demos and a DVD of early live appearances and television appearances—plus a hard backed book all housed in a lift off lid box.

One of those performances was of the band’s Ian Curtis penned “Ceremony”, which had initially been planed as the follow up single to Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.

This version of “Ceremony” was filmed at Manchester’s CoManCHE Student Union on February 6, 1981, and had only been previously available on the FACT 56 compilation video.

New Order share trailer of new documentary series ‘TRANSMISSIONS’

“This is the story of Movement. Told by New Order.”

Vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, left, and bassist Peter Hook perform with New Order at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston on Dec. 6, 1986

New Order have shared a trailer for an upcoming new documentary series about their classic debut album, ‘Movement’.

The series will “tell the story” of the Manchester band’s 1981 debut, which was released in the year following the demise of Joy Division: the band that brought about New Order’s incarnation. In the teaser clip, New Order bassist said: “To be one band with such a distinct identity is pretty bloody lucky, but then to get a complete and separate identity was amazing.”

Weekly episodes of TRANSMISSIONS will launch via New Order’s YouTube channel from next Thursday, March 7.

Elsewhere in the trailer, drummer Stephen Morris recalls smoking “a lot of pot” while making ‘Movement’ (which, he adds, was upgraded to acid for New Order’s second record ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’), while guitarist/singer Bernard Sumner speaks of the “daunting” feeling of entering unchartered territory as a vocalist.

In other news, the iconic band have been announced as headliners for this year’s Victorious Festival in Portsmouth on August 25.

Bernard Sumner said of the headline slot: “After months of touring it felt like we needed to find the perfect setting for our last show of the summer, I believe we have found it! We can’t wait to play at Victorious and its picturesque seaside location!”
