Practical Dancing (for the Modern Man) by Phil Langero

The recently minted Black Hole imprint from Rocket Recordings is a space for those willing to take the darker, less travelled path. For their fourth instalment, they’ve invited Cork’s Phil Langero to bravely cross the event horizon. If you’re familiar with Langero’s Moundabout project with Gnod’s Paddy Shine, you’ll know the rough wheelhouse this exists within. Practical Dancing (For The Modern Man), however, strays even further from the path, continuing up a hill to a handmade wooden shed stood braced against the howling wind. It’s here that Langero concocted his gyrating…

Hyperspecific: Electronic Music for June Reviewed by Jaša Bužinel

This month’s edition of our dance music column brings a surprise 6-hour marathon set from Italian legend Donato Dozzy and plenty of dancefloor goodies, from “bard tech” and new gen Italo house to re-touched French Touch and cerebral IDM techno.

Polygonia

The first thing that came to mind – a psyop to win over the public. The second – perfect. In the midst of an effective boycott campaign over their acquisition by Superstruct Entertainment, who are themselves owned by KKR, a company reported to have ties to weapons manufacturers and companies involved in the development of Israeli settlements on the West Bank, some passionate head in the Boiler Room thinktank came up with an irresistible proposition – to feature an intimate vinyl-only…

O Superfan: How Rock & Pop’s Elite Screw their Loyal Supporters – and why it won’t Work

The mainstream music biz reckons that devoted fans are the golden geese that’ll keep laying, and the streaming services are about to get in on the grift. Eamonn Forde explains why this makes no business sense

“Fan” is one of the most abused words in the music business’s lexicon. There is much talk about how to “engage” and “value” fans, making things as “fan-centric” as possible, with clichéd homily being layered upon clichéd homily like a platitude lasagne. What it too often means is the upending of music’s best customers and shaking them until coins rain from their pockets.

The worst excesses here are ludicrously ostentatious box sets from catalogue acts. Having seen the George Harrison box set going for £859.99, a John Lennon box…

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker – It’s a Love Song

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker

It’s a Love Song

Recorded live earlier earlier this year in Dresden and Vienna, the first album from Brötzmann’s power trio in decades is heavy in more ways than one

For an album arriving twenty-five years after Mute Massaker, Caspar Brötzmann’s last outing with his legendary free noise trio, It’s a Love Song sounds and feels unusually pressing, like the heavy ticks of a clock nearing midnight. “After just a few moments, it became clear that the live recordings I was hearing had a message, a power to reflect on current events,” says the German guitarist, explaining his decision to postpone an already underway studio album to release this collection of two long, punishing live recordings from earlier this year…

Joy Orbison and Overmono Share New Collaboration, ‘Lippy’

It features vocals from Montréal rapper Skiifall

Joy Orbison and Overmono have reprised their joint Joy Overmono alias for a new track, ‘Lippy’.

Featuring vocals from Montréal rapper Skiifall, the new cut was born from a shared studio session between Joy Orbison and Overmono at XL Recordings’ London base, and was further crafted between Bristol, New York and Montréal. Having laid down the instrumental, Joy Orbison connected with Skiifall, following a previous studio session involving the two, feeling his vocal would elevate the production further.

‘Lippy’ has become a fixture of both Joy Orbison and Overmono’s recent sets. Both are set to play at this weekend’s Glastonbury festival, with the latter scheduled for a Sunday night headline slot at the West Holts stage….

Public Enemy have released a new protest song, ‘March Madness’.

Marking the hip hop group’s first original song in five years, the track was written and recorded with a collective of student collaborators.

The student contributors, from Harvard, Berklee, and Howard, include lyricists Anthony Bell, Dee-1, Ollie Marinaccio, Rhiannon Rae Ellis; musicians Sydney DeLeonardis and Ciaran de Chaud; and producer Nigel Sanjai Sanders.

Swell Maps’ John Peel Sessions to be Officially Released for the First Time in 40 Years

Recordings by Swell Maps for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show are to be made officially available for the first time in 40 years on a new release.

Due out on vinyl, CD and in digital formats in September, The John Peel Sessions collects three performances for radio by the 70s experimental punk group: from October 1978, May 1979 and March 1980. All of the recordings have been newly remastered for the release.

Formed in the early 70s and fully realised by 1976, Swell Maps launched their own label to self-release debut single ‘Read About Seymour’ in 1978. Peel was an early supporter, playing it on the radio. His regular airplay of their music, particularly around the release of 1979 debut album…
