Future of London’s Notting Hill Carnival ‘In Jeopardy’ Without ‘Urgent Funding’, According to Leaked Letter

The letter from organisers of the annual event was addressed to Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport

The future of London’s Notting Hill Carnival is “in jeopardy” without “urgent funding”, according to a leaked letter from organisers of the annual event.

The letter was sent to Lisa Nandy, who is Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and leaked by the BBC. In it, Carnival Village Trust chair Ian Comfort said that financial support was “essential to safeguarding the future and public safety of this iconic event”.

This follows an independent safety review of the London event which identified “critical public safety concerns” that will require additional funding to address, the letter said. The full findings of the…

Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin Unveil New Collaboration, ‘Ghosted III’

The third instalment of the trio’s recent series of joint records is out in August

Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin have shared details of a new album, Ghosted III.

Spanning six pieces, the new record marks the third instalment of a series of collaborative records by the three artists, which began in 2022 (appearing among our favourite albums of that year) and continued in 2024 with Ghosted II. A press release says that this latest match-up finds them sounding “a little looser and wilder than before”.

Ambarchi plays guitar on the record, while Berthling handles bass and Werliin takes care of drums. It was recorded across three days last December at a studio in Stockholm, Sweden.

Listen to an edit of the…

Vince Clarke Remixes The Hidden Cameras

Erasure, Depeche and Yazoo synthmeister conjures banger, listen now on tQ

The current run of new music from The Hidden Cameras is proving to be one of 2025’s most exciting musical returns. First, there was the fantastic Pet Shop Boys reworking of ‘How Do You Love?’ that made our Music of the Month for April, now Joel Gibb has teamed up with yet another synth pop legend to rework the latest new tune. Yep, none other than Vince Clarke is on the remixing duties for ‘Undertow’, sprinkling all sorts of classic Vince magic all over it – there’s even strong hints of early Depeche Mode and ‘Can’t Get Enough’ in this. You can listen to the track here. About the untimely end of…

Instant Grounding: Patrick Wolf’s Favourite Albums

From teenage awakenings at the hands of Björk and Stereolab via English folksong, a lockdown obsession with Dead Can Dance and a newfound love of Lili Boulanger, Patrick Wolf takes Luke Turner through the thirteen records that have defined his life

Crying The Neck, Patrick Wolf’s seventh album, is shaped by the folklore of the county of Kent and inspired by the lessons learned and home truths discovered during his 10-year absence from releasing music. As has widely been reported in the press around the release of this excellent record, it was a fraught period of bankruptcy, addiction, and over it all is the death of his mother from cancer. Sometimes the narrative can overwhelm the music, and in this case…

Haress – Skylarks

Haress

Skylarks

On their third album, the Shropshire band do folk horror shorn of the Wicker Man clichés, finds Alex Deller

Skylarks by HARESS

With their third album, Haress join that rare class of bands that can honestly be described as elemental. While the tangled roots of their sound can be traced back to folk, post-rock, ambient and the more literate, gently arcane fringes of indie rock (Arbouretum, Daniel Higgs, All Structures Align), Skylarks places them at a juncture that’s hard to either pinpoint or entirely fathom.

Comprising four tracks, the album stretches and sprawls in a manner that might initially be described as ‘meandering’ – until, that is, you realise just how much intensity of purpose dwells within. Motifs are half-started, seemingly forgotten and…

Silver Machine: Metallic Life Review by Matmos

Like modern day musical alchemists, MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel turn lead (and tin and steel and brass and aluminium) into sonic gold, finds Daryl Worthington

Imagine if instead of images and words we documented our lives by collecting sounds. Diaries and photo albums were replaced with audio recordings of objects being sounded – some musical, some otherwise – capturing things that moved our ears and needed to be inscribed for posterity. To organise this archive we latched onto the recurrence of a particular material rather than people, places or times. That’s the project Baltimore-duo Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt, aka Matmos, undertake on Metallic Life Review. The album is made from recordings of metal objects captured throughout their…

JASSS is to release her third studio album this September.

In a statement that explains the themes of Eager Buyers, JASSS said: “Whether you buy into the dream of capitalism or not, on a subconscious level, many people that lived through the 90s and 00s had capitalist hope from the 80s and 90s drummed into them. It was a promise of something that never came true. We put our…
