Kali Malone and Drew McDowall Detail New Collaborative LP, ‘Magnetism’

They’ve also shared lead track ‘The Sound In My Mind’

Kali Malone and Drew McDowall are releasing a collaborative album.

Titled Magnetism, it features five tracks, which the pair recorded together in just a matter of days. The collaboration was born from a decade-long friendship, during which both artists have witnessed first-hand each other’s artistic and personal evolution.

“We put trust in each other, in our own domains and our unique strengths,” they said in a joint statement about working on the record. They worked on the album spontaneously at McDowall’s Brooklyn studio. Taking the decision to impose certain limitations on how they worked, they programmed bespoke tunings on a monophonic modular synth patch and recorded performance takes without overdubs.

“This track is going to be part of something bigger but I got impatient waiting for that to come together,” the producer said of the new cut

Joy Orbison has released a standalone new single, ‘play it again’.

Taking inspiration from his love of 80s new wave and 90s electronica, the new cut is primed for both home and club listening. It’s become a fixture of the UK producer’s DJ sets over this past summer.

In a statement, Joy Orbison, real name Pete O’Grady, said: “‘play it again’ started in London, but it really began to take shape while I was out in San Francisco. That trip ended up being quite a memorable one. I got pulled in to Portola [festival] to fill…

The Life Push: An Interview with Ursula Sereghy

Ahead of an AV performance at Lunchmeat Festival this month, Prague’s Ursula Sereghy tells Daryl Worthington about how post-humanism rewired her brain, the themes of safety (and lack of it) explored on her new album Cordial, and why playful music can still be deadly serious

Ursula Sereghy’s music is radiantly askew. ‘Fight Child’, the opening track on her latest album Cordial, has labyrinthine chimes ripple around liquid beats. Synthetic wind instruments sprout and spiral. Voice, sliced into snippets, alternates between acting as a drum and a pointillistic choir. It sets the tone for an album where foreground and background, centre and periphery settle in unusual configurations. The Prague-based artist’s work shares space with the gleeful, hyperactive experimentation found…

Listen to New Track from Liam Andrews’ Aicher Project

My Disco and Eros bassist to release new record via Downwards – read an interview here

Liam Andrews is an artist we’ve followed on The Quietus for years via his work in Melbourne’s superb My Disco, and more recently as part of Eros with Karl O’Connor and Boris Wilsdorf. Andrews now has a solo release imminent on O’Connor’s Downwards label under the Aicher moniker, which comes, he tells tQ, from an old Irish poem and translates to “a sharp, bitter wind”. The original text reads “Is aicher in gaíth innocht fu fuasna fairggæ findḟolt ni ágor réimm mora minn dond láechraid lainn ua Lothlind”, which means “Bitter is the wind tonight, it tosses the ocean’s white hair. I fear not the coursing of…

Full Clip: Daveed Diggs’ Favourite Albums

From the foundational inspiration of George Clinton to Bay Area hip hop, and the lifechanging experience of witnessing Prince’s last ever show, Clipping MC Daveed Diggs takes Stevie Chick through the soundtrack of his life

Even within the realm of hip hop – a genre where beautiful music is so frequently made by slamming together jarringly estranged elements – Daveed Diggs’ CV doesn’t really make sense. He’s best known in the straight world for originating the twin roles of the Marquis De Lafayette and President Thomas Jefferson in cultural phenom Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-garlanded Broadway musical, which won Diggs a Tony (he’s also won awards and nominations for his performances in the TV adaptation of Hamilton and Snowpiercer).

Lucrecia Dalt – A Danger to Ourselves

Lucrecia Dalt

A Danger to Ourselves

Joined by David Sylvian and Juana Molina, Lucrecia Dalt finds wild abandon in minimalist electronics and eerie soundscapes, finds Lina Adams

A Danger to Ourselves by Lucrecia Dalt

On her latest endeavour, Lucrecia Dalt at once returns to her delightfully minimalist, ambient roots while building a cinematic world where power and fragility intertwine. David Sylvian, co-producer and Dalt’s partner, certainly makes his mark on the album, which plays like a window into their relationship. It feels almost too intimate for the world to hear.

The hauntingly cyclical ‘cosa rara’ opens the album, a piece that feels like it could easily slot into the Killing Eve soundtrack. Its title, translated from Spanish as ‘a strange thing’, doesn’t miss the mark….

Jessy Lanza has released a new single through Hyperdub, ‘Slapped By My Life’.

Out now, the track marks the first new music from the Canadian artist since the release of her 2023 album Love Hallucination. It’s described in a press release as “a bittersweet love letter to Jessy’s husband and frequent collaborator Winston H. Case”, and comes with co-production from Pearson Sound.

In a statement, Lanza said: “I wrote ‘Slapped By My Life’ while my husband Winston was going through chemotherapy. The treatment cycle was relentless and he spent most of the time bedridden, so while he slept I wrote this song for him. It’s been challenging to…
