Since 2007, Austin Lunn’s much-praised atmospheric black metal project Panopticon has plied its trade in searing meditations on everything from environmentalism, to the Appalachian coal mining industry and Native American oppression. Successfully realising a unique blend of folk, bluegrass, country and black metal, 2012 to 2015 saw Panopticon release a hat-trick of stellar albums in the form of Kentucky, Roads to the North and Autumn Eternal. Reissue of the Week: Phew, Erika Kobayashi and Dieter Moebius’ Radium Girls

Originally released in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, and centred on the story of real Japanese women who suffered radiation poisoning through their factory work, this newly-reissued collaboration should invite deep reflection when played today, says Jennifer Lucy Allan

I do not want to survive a nuclear disaster. I saw Threads at university like everyone else, but was already haunted by a YA novel I read as a young teen, about three siblings who lived through a nuclear bomb, which I now realise must have taken from real reporting in John Hersey’s Hiroshima. Organic Intelligence XLVII: Microtonal Jazz

In this month’s antidote to the algorithm, Stewart Smith explains how microtonal jazz can help dissolve Western preconceptions of how music is constructed and understood

Zekkereya El-magharbel (via artist Bandcamp)

A portal to new sonic realms, microtonality is one of the most potent tools in contemporary music making. By exploring intervals beyond the 12-note scale of Equal Temperament, microtonal music challenges normative Western ideas of beauty and “correctness”. It can be used to push already extreme music off the map, as in Jute Gyte’s crushing black metal, or to create the otherworldly colours of Jules’ Reidy’s Ghost/Spirit. It’s the umami in Horse Lords’ math-rock and it’s threaded through new classical music.

Microtonality is popping off in jazz too. Of course, jazz has always been…
